McCall Family Day Hike: Boulder Lake

  • V29H+RR McCall, ID (map)

Who: Open to the public

When: June 23 2023 @ 3:00 pm (hike and sack dinner)

Where: Boulder Lake

Difficulty: Beginner and up

SBFC executive director Ryan Ghelfi, along with his wife Natalie and their three children, will be leading a half-day hike, open to the public. This hike is approx.4 miles in length. We expect the hike to take approx. 3 hours + time hanging out at Boulder Lake. This hike is geared towards people with children who want to get their kids outside in the high country this summer. Those without children are of course encouraged to come as well. This will be a late afternoon/evening hike with (BYOD) picnic dinners at Boulder Lake!

What to bring:

Participants should bring picnic dinner, water, extra layers, sunscreen, bug repellent, and personal first aid supplies. Good, closed-toed footwear is a must.  Ryan will be carrying a Garmin in reach for emergency communication.

How to get to the trailhead:

From McCall Drive S on Hwy 55, turn left on Elo Road, follow Elo through the curves, and then veer left when you reach Boulder Lake Rd. Stay on Boulder Lake Rd for 5 miles until you reach the end of the main road at the trailhead at Boulder Meadows Reservoir. We will meet at the trailhead at 3pm.

What to expect:

You should expect to be out for around 4 hours with breaks along the way. We will hike mostly as a group and if we do separate a bit we’ll regroup often. This is a great opportunity to meet other families who like to hike, and to get to talk with folks who are well-versed in mountain and Wilderness travel. This hike will not be in a federally designated Wilderness, but the skills and confidence you gain will apply to such endeavors.

How to sign up:

If you would like to sign up for this outing, please head over to this form and fill it out completely. If you have questions please send them to Ryan Ghelfi (rghelfi@selwaybitterroot.org)

Why is SBFC hosting day hikes?

SBFC is committed to the Northstar that connecting people and communities to our public Wilderness lands is a BIG deal. We can’t go out into the Frank Church or the Selway-Bitterroot every day, but we can hike in our local trails and with our local communities. We want to provide more opportunities for people to engage with SBFC and our mission, and what better way to do that than to take people on awesome hikes? These hikes will help people gain skills and confidence to dive deeper into the awesome world of Wilderness!
