Cabin & Lookout Hosting
The Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness Volunteer Cabin Hosting Program offers volunteer opportunities to help care for USFS backcountry stations in partnership with the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests and the Bitterroot National Forest.
Volunteers serve as “hosts” at several historic cabins and a lookout, while providing support to the U.S. Forest Service and other professional wilderness staff and volunteers. Volunteers assist with backcountry communications and greet, educate, and help backcountry visitors, including pilots and backpackers. Volunteers also provide maintenance and general upkeep of these historic structures, as well as assist with seasonal openings and closings.
Depending on the location and need, volunteers will typically stay at a cabin or lookout for two weeks to two months, during the late spring, summer and fall. Cabins and lookouts generally accommodate one or two individuals at a time. These structures are for administrative use, so the need for volunteers can vary from year to year depending on projects that the USFS has planned.
Many of our volunteers come back year after year for the fabulous wilderness experience that this opportunity provides.
Our apologies! We are not recruiting potential cabin hosts at this time.
